Planting Elephant Ears in Pots and Containers

Planting in Containers:

1. If you are planting in containers there's a number of things that you need to know. Firstly, the soil mix should be 60% topsoil or crummy backyard soil, 20% peat moss, and 20% compost or dehydrated counter oil.
2. Elephant ears have a secret rule regarding container or pot size, the smaller the pot, the smaller the plant. We recommend using a container no less than 10 to 12 inches in order to grow a plant approximately 36 to 60 inches (of course, this depends on the variety of elephant ear you purchase). Usually, the largest pot needed to plant elephant ears is 18 inches in diameter so, 14 inches is usually the ideal size.
3. As these plants develop slowly it is best to plant them in a temporary container, and then transfer the plant late spring.
4. Place 4 inches of soil in the bottom of your container or pot then take you elephant ear tuber, bullseye facing upward, and nestle it on top of the soil.
5. Next, cover the tuber in soil. Making sure that there is at least 4 inches of soil on top of the tuber but no more than 6 inches.
6. You want the tuber anchored in nice heavy but well drainable soil.
7. When you are ready to transfer the Elephant Ear outside, get a larger pot ready with soil and repeat the process. If it has sprouted you want to gentle bury these when you are transferring it.

Important Facts: Elephant Ears are extremely deer resistant by giving off a particular scent that deer have an aversion to. So, these plants are perfect for anyone who wants to keep deer away from their gardens.

Be careful with elephant ears, especially if you have children or pets. These plants are toxic, particularly when ingested and can cause skin irritation and itching.
